Literature Text

The musk deer suddenly stopped grazing and scanned the area. She was a victim of the silence, which had entered the area when her guard was down. The creature had to get away, but she knew her life would be over if she ran in the wrong direction.
She wanted to depart from the maddening silence and keep away from the danger it held within.

The striped hunter noticed that his prey sensed his presence; he could tell by the way she abruptly moved her head trying to find him. If she got away, then the novice hunter would have failed for the fifth time. He had to be quick but quiet. Using the tall grass and the fading light like a cloak, he took carefully soundless steps. His prey would flee if he broke the silence. The hunter was so close; he only had a few more steps before he could perform a fatal pounce.

Fear clutched the deer's heart. The silence was overwhelming. She finally decided to flee, but before she could take one step, the silence was finally broken by an echoing roar. Then, she felt sharp teeth stab her neck and long claws dig into her back. Her killer was too strong; he pinned her down and slowly ripped her apart.
As her slow death continued, she surrendered. She knew that the pain would soon cease, her life would belong to the striped one, and she would never again hear that maddening silence.
This is another short story I write during high school in the creative writing club. Please tell me what you think about the ending. I try to keep my endings either happy or bittersweet. Usually if I'm watching Planet Earth, I'll be sad if an animal gets killed and eaten by another animal, but I try to think, "at least the hunter has a meal."
